Indian River in Florida

One of the good things that happen to us in 2012 was when we bought a house in Port Saint John. The main street from our place is US 1 and the Indian River is about 2 minutes away. The Kennedy Space Center ( NASA ) is about 15 minutes more or less from our place.

The Indian River is a waterway in Florida. I love this view especially at sunset and sunrise. This is part of the Indian River Lagoon system which forms the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Nearby our place is Nicol Park and the view is amazing. Hubby and I usually go there for a picnic.

This road is heading to Kennedy Space Center and if you love to watch the dolphin, this area is one of the best places to spot the dolphin. Indian River extends southward from the Ponce de Leon inlet in New Smyrna Beach and also across the "Haulover Canal" and along the western shore of Merritt Island. This road heads to Merritt Island.

The Banana River is the second river nearby us and it flows into the Indian River on the island's south side. This Indian River continues southward to St. Lucie Inlet. It is pretty big. I learned from the folks here that Indian River was originally named Rio de Ais after the Ais Indian tribe, who lived along the east coast of Florida.

Indian River is shallow and I do not see anybody swimming in there yet. In Nicol Park, there is a sign that says "Beware of Gators". Indian River is popular for fishing and boating. It is 121 mi or 195 km long.

Indian River is an estuarine system where freshwater meets the salt water. When I took all these pictures, the air stinks. The bridges in the neighborhood prevented the flow of red drift algae. That is the reason why sometimes, the area around Indian River stinks because of the hydrogen sulfide odor.
